Mastering

The last step before release: level, dynamics and sequence for streaming, download or vinyl — judged in a treated mastering room, not on laptop speakers.

Mastering engineer listens on monitors in treated room.

Mastering at Nohexevo assumes your mix is already balanced. We do not rearrange parts or replace mixing — we shape level, tone and stereo image so the track holds together on different systems and meets sensible loudness targets without sounding unnecessarily flat.

You send stereo mixdowns or a small EP package; mix and mastering engineer Eva Koblinger listens on nearfields in the dedicated room and checks on headphones and modest speakers. Attended sessions are available by arrangement; the default is a clean offline workflow with written notes.

Workflow

  1. Upload

Send stereo WAV with headroom, state sample rate and target platforms. We confirm receipt and delivery window.

  2. Analysis

Spectrum, phase, true peak and reference check. We flag issues before printing the master.

  3. Master

EQ, dynamics and limiting for the agreed target — digital, optional separate version for vinyl cutting.

  4. Review

Delivery via download; up to 2 rounds on loudness and tone, not new mix revisions.

When mastering helps

Mastering pays off when the mix is done and you are ready to release — single, EP or album sequence. It will not fix an unbalanced mix by itself. If bass and vocals still fight, start with mixing or send a revised mix file.

For podcasts or speech-only shows, mastering is often overkill; a tight edit (podcast production) is enough. Music with a firm release date benefits from consistent LUFS across tracks.

What we need from your mix

Ideally 24-bit WAV, peaks around −6 dBFS, no “as loud as possible” limiter on the mix bus. State sample rate and whether you expect intersample peaks (dense synth buses). Export a final stereo mix — stems are not part of standard mastering.

  • File name: artist — title — mix vX
  • ISRC and metadata optional in a text note
  • For EPs: track order and gap lengths

Streaming loudness context: loudness and streaming guide.

Workflow in the mastering room

The room is acoustically separate from the tracking desk — stable listening, less daylight swing than the live area. Hybrid chain: digital processing plus selected outboard for character.

We document source mix, master version and optional DDP or WAV sequence for pressing. Attended mastering is available if you want to listen live; it consumes studio time billed like session hours, not like offline per-track pricing.

Formats and destinations

Default delivery: 16/44.1 WAV for many aggregators, plus 24/48 or 24/96 on request. Streaming versions follow common LUFS guidance without promising chart loudness — clarity over hype.

Vinyl masters need a separate conversation: side length, HF treatment, optional uncut file for the lathe. We do not manufacture records; you receive files for your plant. Download-only releases get the same care as physical formats.

Revisions and limits

Included: 2 rounds on the delivered master — slightly louder or softer, targeted EQ in mastering context. Not a new mix version, not a full remaster after arrangement changes — that is a new job.

Send bundled feedback by email with timecodes or section names. We reply to mastering enquiries within 2 business days; turnaround depends on load and is stated in the quote.

Archive and privacy

We keep mastering projects for 12 months, then delete — see privacy policy. Download finals promptly. We do not host long-term distribution; uploads use an agreed channel, not public open links when confidential pre-releases are involved.

If you need to compare versions, we can deliver clearly named alternates (slightly more dynamic or conservative) within the same job — not a substitute for revision rounds, but useful for label sign-off.

With mixing and vocals upstream

Many jobs run vocal recording → mixing → mastering in sequence. You can book everything at Nohexevo or only the last step — provided the mix meets the requirements above. Unsure? Send a short mix sample via contact.

FAQ

How loud will my track be?

We align to common platform LUFS targets and your references — without crushing the mix. Numbers and examples: loudness and streaming.

Can I attend the session?

Yes, by appointment in the mastering room. Offline per-track mastering is the default and often easier on your calendar.

Do you master DJ mixes or podcasts?

Continuous DJ mixes yes, by quote. Speech podcasts fit podcast production better — editing focus, not musical loudness wars.

What if my mix has technical flaws?

Clipping, heavy noise or phase cancellation is flagged before mastering. Send a fixed mix or book mixing — a new mix does not fall under revision rounds.

How fast is turnaround?

After file check and quote we give a window — often a few business days for singles, longer for busy EP periods. Rush only when the calendar allows, at extra cost.
